The Optokinetic Nystagmus (OKN) can be used to stimulate the cerebral hemispheres. In this exercise, the eyes follow a striped pattern in one direction and then reflexively jump back in the opposite direction. Eye movements are controlled by our brain, and reflexive eye movements are an excellent starting point for eye training.
When tracking movements to the left, the left side of the brain is typically activated, while saccadic movements to the right also tend to engage the left side. This means that by manipulating the direction of the bar movement in OKN, one can selectively stimulate one side of the brain. For instance, if assessments indicate that the left hemisphere requires more activity, the OKN can be tested with bar movement directed to the left. Conversely, if the right hemisphere needs more engagement, the movement can be directed to the right.
